represents a "grassleaved" iris, Iris graminea L., and Iris sibirica L. from Historia plantarum by Conrad Gessner. The author of the painting is not known but could be the Swiss naturalist himself. The portrait from live samples confirms the high value assigned by C. Gessner  to the faithful iconographic documentation of the plants included in his famous work.

The plate originates from the legacy of Conrad Gessner in custody at the University Library (Universitätsbibliothek, Abteilung III: Handschriften und Graphische Sammlung)  in Erlangen, Germany, under code Ms. 2386, fol.273v.
